Sundarakanda
Sarga 32

Hearing the story of Rama, Sita was delighted in her heart. Meditating on Rama, she looked around. Then she saw Hanuman in the branches of the Simsupa tree. He was wearing white clothes, with lightning bright looks. She saw a Vanara, not a 'nara' singing a song. He was looking respectful, with the luster of Ashoka flowers in full bloom. His eyes were shining with the brilliance of molten gold. He spoke pleasingly. She had not seen a Vanara like that before. She was taken aback. Lost in wonder, Sita started thinking with a mind that was clearly shaken.

Sarga 32 starts with Sita clearly shaken.

||Sloka 32.01||

tataśśākhāṁtarē līnaṁ dr̥ṣṭvā calitamānasā|
vēṣṭitārjuna vastraṁ taṁ vidyutsaṁghāta piṁgaḷam||32.01||

Goindaraja Tika says- vēṣṭitārjunavastraṁ vēṣṭita dhavaḷa vastraṁ;bhayāt calita mānasaḥ;

Tilaka Tika says- calitamānasā'dr̥ṣṭarūpō'yamapi māyāmr̥gō vēti sītā calita cittā ;

sa||tataḥ śākhāṁtarēlīnaṁ vēṣṭitārjunavastraṁ vidyutsaṁghātapiṁgaḷaṁ taṁ dr̥ṣṭvā calitamānasā abhavat||

tataḥ śākhāṁtarēlīnaṁ -
one hidden in the branches of the tree
vēṣṭitārjunavastraṁ -
one wearing white cloth around his waist

of tawny complexion like cluster of lightnings,

seeing him Sita got perplexed.

maithilī ciṁtayāmāsa vismayaṁ paramaṁ gatā|
ahō bhīma midaṁ rūpaṁ vānarasya durāsadam||32.03||

sa|| paramaṁ vismayaṁ gatā maithilī ciṁtayāmāsa| ahō vānarasya idaṁ rūpaṁ bhīmaṁ durāsadam ||

paramaṁ vismayaṁ gatā - very much surprised
maithilī ciṁtayāmāsa - Maithili started thinking
ahō vānarasya idaṁ rūpaṁ bhīmaṁ - This Vanara's form is frightening,
durāsadam - difficult to approach

"Sita was very surprised and thought that Hanuman's appearance was frightening and inaccessible." ||32.03||

durnirīkṣa miti jñātvā punarēva mumōha sā|
vilalāpa bhr̥śaṁ sītā karuṇaṁ bhayamōhitā||32.04||

noble lady enveloped in sorrow,
rāmarāmēti lakṣmaṇēti -
( saying) Rama' and 'Lakshmana'.

"The noble lady enveloped with sorrow, cried pitiably in many ways saying in a low voice repeatedly 'Rama Rama' and 'Lakshmana'." ||32.05||

maithilī ciṁtayāmāsa svapnō'yamiti bhāminī||32.06||

sā vīkṣamāṇā pr̥thu bhugnavaktram

dadarśa piṁgādhipatē ramātyaṁ
vātātmajaṁ buddhimatāṁ variṣṭham||32.07||

Looking at him she quickly lost her senses

as if she was almost dead

svastyastu rāmāya sa lakṣmaṇāya
tathā piturmē janakasya rājñaḥ|| 32.09||

sa|| adya mayā vikr̥taḥ śāstrakāraṇaiḥ niṣiddhaḥ śākhāmr̥gaḥ svapnē dr̥ṣṭaḥ| salakṣmaṇāya rāmāya tathā rājñaḥ mē pituḥ janakasya svastiḥ astu||

today I saw an ugly monkey in my dream

for Rama along with Lakshmana
tathā rājñaḥ mē pituḥ janakasya -
similarly for the king my father Janaka
svastiḥ astu -may auspicious things happen

Today I saw an ugly monkey in my dream which is a prohibited animal in dreams by Sastras. Let auspicious things happen for Rama, Lakshmana, and the king my father Janaka." ||32.09||

svapnō'pi nāyaṁ nahi mē'sti nidrā
śōkēna duḥkhēna ca pīḍitāyāḥ|
sukhaṁ hi mē nāsti yatō'smihīnā
tēnēṁdupūrṇapratimānanēna||32.10||

sa|| ayaṁ svapnaḥ api na | śōkēna duḥkhēna ca pīḍitāyāḥ mē nidrā nāsti hi mē sukhaṁ nāsti hi yataḥ iṁdrapūrṇapratimānēna tēna hīnā asmi ||

this is not a dream
śōkēna duḥkhēna ca pīḍitāyāḥ mē nidrā nāsti hi -
troubled by grief and sorrow I have no sleep
mē sukhaṁ nāsti hi -
I have no happiness also
yataḥ iṁdrapūrṇapratimānēna -
because the one whose face is like that of full moon.

rāmēti rāmēti sadaiva buddhyā
viciṁtya vācā bruvatī ta mēva|
tasyānurūpaṁ ca kathāṁ tamarthaṁ
ēvaṁ prapaśyāmi tathā śr̥ṇōmi||32.11||

sa|| rāmēti rāmēti sadā ēva buddhyā viciṁtya tamēva br̥vaṁtī tasya anurūpaṁ tadarthaṁ kathāṁ ēva prapaśyāmi tathā śruṇōmi ||

ahaṁ tasyādya manōbhavēna
saṁpīḍitā tadgata sarvabhāvā|
viciṁtayaṁtī satataṁ tamēva
tathaiva paśyāmi tathā śr̥ṇōmi||32.12||"

tormented by intense love for him

with thoughts always immersed in him, and thinking about him

now I only see him and hear him.

manōratha ssyāditi ciṁtayāmi
tathāpi buddhyā ca vitarkayāmi|
kiṁ kāraṇaṁ tasya hi nāsti rūpam
suvyakta rūpaśca vada tyayaṁ mām||32.13||

sa|| manōrathaḥ syāt iti ciṁtayāmi | buddhyā ca tathā vitarkayāmi | tasya rūpaṁ nāsti hi | ayaṁ suvyaktarūpaḥ mām vadati kāraṇaṁ kiṁ ||

this one in front of me has a form and is speaking to me why

namō'stu vācaspatayē savajriṇē
svayaṁbhuvē caiva hutāśanāyaca|
anēna cōktaṁ yadidaṁ mamāgratō
vanaukasā tacca tathāstu nānyathā||32.14||

sa|| savajriṇē vācaspatayē svayaṁbhuvē ca ēva hūtāśanāya ca namaḥ astu| anēna vanaukasā mama agrataḥ yat idaṁ uktaṁ tat tathā astu| anyathā na||

to Indra along with Brihaspati, Brahma the creator
ēva hūtāśanāya ca namaḥ astu- the fire god too Salutations

all those words spoken by the Vanara in front of me
tat tathā astu - may that be true
anyathā na - not anything else

"Salutations to Indra along with Brihaspati, Brahma the creator and the fire god too. Let all those words spoken by the Vanara in front of me be true and not anything else." ||32.14||

Hearing the story of Rama, looking at Hanuman, Sita was lost in confusion , unable to perceive the possibility of any one crossing the ocean reaching Lanka in search of her. Thinking of the monkey in front of her could be another form of the deer that resulted in her abduction, she unable to get out of confusion. Sita could see only one way, which is to pray that whatever was said by the Vanara come true.

"Salutations to Indra along with Brihaspati, Salutations to Brahma the creator and the fire god too. Let all those words spoken by the Vanara in front of me be true and not anything else".

When one is disturbed, the mind runs in many directions. Bringing that mind into control is the first task Saying prayers and bringing agitated mind to rest is the first step in that direction.

That is what we see in this thirty second Sarga of Sundarakanda.

ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē vālmīkīyē
caturviṁśat sahasrikāyāṁ saṁhitāyām
śrīmatsuṁdarakāṁḍē dvātriṁśassargaḥ||

Thus ends the Sarga thirty-two of Sundarakanda in Valmiki Ramayana .
